DEPUTY HEAD OF OUTGROWERS Sugarcane Agriculture | Outgrower Development | Uganda | International Expatriate Opportunity Location: Uganda, East Africa Employment Type: Full-Time | Senior Management Remuneration: Competitive expatriate package commensurate with experience and qualifications THE OPPORTUNITY An established and highly respected large-scale sugar and agro-industrial operation in East Africa is seeking an experienced Deputy Head of Outgrowers to support the strategic and operational management of its extensive sugarcane outgrower programme. This is a significant leadership opportunity for an experienced Indian agricultural professional with a strong background in commercial sugarcane production, farmer development and outgrower management . The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Outgrowers and senior agricultural leadership to strengthen farmer productivity, expand productive cane acreage, improve agricultural practices and ensure a reliable, high-quality supply of sugarcane to the factory. INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATE PROFILE The client is specifically seeking an Indian Expatriate candidate. Preference will be given to candidates who: Are Indian citizens with substantial commercial sugarcane \/ agricultural experience. Have previously worked in Africa , particularly within the sugarcane or broader agro-industrial sector; OR Are currently based in India and have the capability and willingness to relocate to Uganda. Have proven experience working with outgrower farmers, contract farming or large-scale farmer-development programmes . Understand the operational and commercial realities of sugarcane production in emerging-market environments. Candidates with African experience will have a distinct advantage; however, exceptional India-based candidates with strong, directly transferable sugarcane and outgrower experience are encouraged to apply. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to the Head of Outgrowers, the Deputy Head will: Support the strategic management and development of the outgrower programme. Drive the development of productive sugarcane acreage among existing and new farmers. Lead and monitor agricultural extension and farmer-development activities. Improve farmer productivity, cane yields and adoption of recommended agronomic practices. Oversee planting, crop establishment, ratoon management, fertilisation, pest and disease control and harvesting readiness. Monitor seed cane and agricultural input programmes. Develop accurate cane-production forecasts and support factory cane-supply planning. Work closely with harvesting, transport and factory teams to ensure reliable cane supply. Build strong relationships with farmers, farmer associations and community stakeholders. Manage and develop field-based agricultural teams and extension personnel. Monitor agricultural performance, budgets, farmer support programmes and operational KPIs. Use agricultural data and field intelligence to identify productivity gaps and implement corrective action. Support continuous improvement, mechanisation and sustainable agricultural practices. Deputise for the Head of Outgrowers when required. IDEAL CANDIDATE The successful candidate will be a hands-on, commercially astute agricultural leader who combines technical sugarcane knowledge with excellent farmer and people-management capability. You should ideally possess: A Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Production, Agricultural Management or a related discipline. 10+ years' commercial agricultural experience , with significant sugarcane exposure. At least 5 years' senior management \/ leadership experience . Strong experience within sugarcane agriculture and outgrower \/ contract-farming environments . Proven experience managing agricultural extension teams and large farmer networks. Strong understanding of sugarcane agronomy, planting, ratooning, crop nutrition, pest\/disease management and harvesting. Experience with cane forecasting, farmer productivity and cane-supply planning. Strong commercial, analytical and budgeting skills. Excellent farmer relationship, negotiation and stakeholder-management abilities. Strong Microsoft Office and agricultural reporting capabilities. A valid driver's licence and willingness to undertake extensive field travel. Excellent English communication skills. AFRICA EXPERIENCE – HIGHLY ADVANTAGEOUS Previous experience in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa or another African agricultural environment will be highly advantageous. Candidates currently working in India's sugar industry with strong experience in large-scale sugarcane outgrower management, farmer mobilisation, agricultural extension and cane supply are also encouraged to apply.
