Refractory Assistant

Purpose of the Role

To inspect, maintain, and repair refractory work, including launders, furnace linings, and related structures, supporting safe and reliable casting operations at the Richards Bay Casthouse.

The core responsibilities of the position include:

• Inspect and maintain launder sections in the plant.
• Carry out routine maintenance of the Holding furnace refractory.
• Assist the supervisor in refractory maintenance work.
• Carry out work related to casting launder sections, hopper refractory, filter bowl inserts, gunning, ladle maintenance (manage breaking of build and rebuilding of ladles) and spouts.
• Inspect all launder sections on a daily basis.
• Cast Holding furnace door units into the framed steelwork.
• Assist with all associated ladle maintenance
• Inspect and casting of damper blades

The core requirements for the position include:

• Matric.
• A minimum of two years' experience in refractory work or masonry work, or in a building industry, in an assistant capacity.

Technical Competencies:

• Basic knowledge of equipment used in refractory and/or civil work.
• Knowledge of mixing, concrete/hammers, grinders, mixers, brick cutters, etc.

Leadership & Behavioural Competencies:

• Basic knowledge of safety, housekeeping, PPE, and lock-out procedures.
• Willing to work standby and near hot furnaces.
• Ability to attend spontaneously in emergency situations.
