POSITION INFO:
Our client is a cosmetic formulation business seeking an experienced R&D Manager to lead laboratory activities and project management from stability testing through to commercial launch. This is an in-office role based at the Parow Plant for someone with a proven track record in cosmetic R&D, strong project delivery discipline, and the ability to manage teams, budgets and cross-functional stakeholder relationships. Key Responsibilities Oversee all R&D lab activities, including weekly planning, monitoring progress, and ensuring operational chemists and lab assistants are adequately trained. Manage NPD and Formulation Upgrade projects from stability stage to commercial batch manufacturing and launch, ensuring timely handovers to the Chief Innovation Officer. Manage and mentor the R&D team, conducting performance appraisals, identifying training needs, and maintaining discipline. Control and administration of IEP\/CEP samples, MMI storage, archiving, updating and issuing, and BOM maintenance on Syspro. Chair weekly project tracker meetings, providing feedback to the Head of R&D and broader team. Draft and approve departmental SOPs; compile Change Control documentation and attend related meetings. Manage projects related to regulatory compliance, raw material alternatives, packaging changes, and stability testing. Troubleshoot batch failures, reworks and customer complaints in collaboration with Manufacturing and QA teams; ensure production plan viability with Operational Chemist, Supply Chain and Manufacturing. Manage departmental resources, including purchasing of consumables and evaluating new equipment. Support the Head of R&D in setting and monitoring the departmental budget; prepare and present monthly statistical reports; maintain raw material files and key documentation. Requirements 6–8 years' experience in a cosmetic R&D environment, with a minimum of 5 years in a managerial role. Bachelor of Science (BSc) in a relevant scientific field; Coschem Diploma or Diploma in Cosmetic Formulation; postgraduate qualification in Project Management preferred. Proven track record of managing projects, meeting deadlines and staying within budget. Proficiency in Syspro, MMI systems, and strong Excel skills. Knowledge of SOP development, Change Control administration, and stability testing protocols.
