POSITION INFO:
Efficiency Staffing Solutions (Pty) Ltd Registration No. 2022\/876857\/07 The Charge Hand is responsible for supervising and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the scaffolding team, ensuring that scaffolding is erected, altered and dismantled safely, efficiently and according to approved procedures, specifications, quality standards and site requirements. The Charge Hand is expected to lead by example, maintain high safety standards and ensure that work is completed correctly and within the required timeframes. Duties & Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of scaffolding erectors and assistants. Allocate work to team members according to the daily work plan and site requirements. Ensure all scaffolding erection, alteration and dismantling is carried out safely and correctly. Ensure work is performed according to approved drawings, specifications, procedures and instructions. Inspect scaffolding materials and components before use and remove damaged or defective equipment from service. Ensure scaffolding is properly braced, secured, supported and stable before being handed over for use. Ensure working platforms, guardrails, toe boards, access ladders and other required safety components are correctly installed. Conduct or assist with daily pre-work inspections and toolbox talks. Ensure employees understand and comply with applicable safety procedures and site rules. Ensure employees wear required PPE and use fall-protection equipment correctly when working at height. Monitor work performance and ensure work is completed to the required quality standard. Identify hazards and unsafe working conditions and take immediate corrective action where possible. Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, defective equipment and safety concerns to the Supervisor\/Foreman. Ensure good housekeeping is maintained in the work area. Coordinate the safe loading, unloading, movement and storage of scaffolding materials. Ensure scaffolding materials and equipment are handled and stored correctly. Monitor company tools, equipment and materials and report losses or damage. Assist with scaffolding inspections, tagging and handover procedures. Ensure scaffolding is not used, altered or dismantled without required authorization and safety controls. Liaise with the Supervisor\/Foreman regarding work progress, manpower, materials and site constraints. Monitor progress and communicate delays or problems promptly. Ensure the team follows instructions and completes assigned work within required timeframes. Train, guide and mentor, less experienced scaffolding employees where required. Maintain discipline, teamwork and good communication within the scaffolding team. Ensure employees comply with company policies, procedures and Occupational Health and Safety requirements. Complete or assist with required daily records, checklists and reports. Perform any other reasonable duties related to the position as instructed by management. Minimum Qualifications National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent Must have strong practical understanding of multiple trades i.e. electrical, mechanical, civil or structural work Relevant Trade test qualification and site safety certificates Recognized scaffolding training or qualification. Valid scaffolding competency certificates required. Working at Heights training\/certificate. Fall Protection training, where applicable. Basic Occupational Health and Safety training. First Aid training will be an advantage. Valid driver's license will be an advantage. Minimum Experience Minimum 3-5 years' practical experience in the scaffolding industry. Minimum 1-2 years' experience in a supervisory or Charge Hand capacity. Proven experience in the erection, alteration and dismantling of scaffolding. Experience supervising and coordinating a team of scaffolding erectors and assistants. Experience in construction, industrial, mining, petrochemical or similar sites will be an advantage. Experience working safely at heights and using fall-protection systems. Experience conducting toolbox talks, pre-work inspections and identifying workplace hazards. Experience with scaffolding inspections, tagging and handover procedures. Ability to read and understand basic scaffolding drawings, layouts, specifications and work instructions. Proven ability to manage daily work activities, manpower and materials. Good understanding of Occupational Health and Safety requirements applicable to scaffolding work. Safety Responsibility The Charge Hand has a direct responsibility to ensure that work under his supervision is performed safely and in accordance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety requirements and company procedures. The Charge Hand must not permit scaffolding to be erected, altered, dismantled or used where there is an identified safety risk or where required safety controls have not been implemented. Any unsafe condition must be reported and addressed immediately. Performance Expectations Maintain a strong safety culture within the team. Ensure quality workmanship and compliance with specifications. Complete work efficiently and within agreed timeframes. Maintain good housekeeping and proper material control. Communicate effectively with management and team members. Lead, motivate and develop the scaffolding team. Take accountability for the work performed by the team under his supervision.
