Job Description:

The Rock Art Research Institute (RARI) – at the University of the Witwatersrand – teaches undergraduates and postgraduates in the rock arts of Africa and world hunter-gatherer studies. With over four decades’ worth of research and insight, the Institute has established itself as a premier organisation in the discovery of our country and continent’s rich heritage. Graciously sponsored by the Rupert Art Foundation, RARI seeks to appoint two Academic Interns to assist with the work of teaching, discovery, recording and publication. Khoe-San descendants and African applicants are particularly encouraged to apply.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Writing/publishing: Producing publications for accredited journals
  • Tutoring/Teaching and Academic Development: Assisting teaching staff with lectures, pracs and tutorials with the aim of taking over in a lecturing role.
  • Teaching skills will be acquired through mentoring and at Wits’ Centre for Teaching and Learning Development.
  • Field research: Assisting with and/or conducting novel field work
  • Digi-Lab assistance: Assist with academic facet of the RARI digital archive

Job Requirements:

  • Good communication skills with teams of Technical Interns or equivalent
  • BA/BSc Hons archaeology, anthropology or equivalent
  • Tutoring experience
  • Demonstrate knowledge of southern African archaeology and rock art
  • Good communication skills with University authorities, academics and support staff
  • Good interpersonal skills, especially email communication
