Job Purpose:
- To design, review, coordinate and integrate the Ventilation Engineering and Occupational Hygiene systems and networks to optimise operational efficiency in respect of regulatory and statutory compliance to achieve Zero harm and sustain organizational performance.
Minimum Required Qualification:
- Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (MEC)
- NQF 6 (Diploma or Advanced Certificate) or NQF 7 (Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma) relevant qualification will be advantageous.
The Appointee should:
- NQF 6 (Diploma or Advanced Certificate) or NQF 7 (Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma)
- At least 5 years’ experience in a related role, of which 2 years should have been at a management level or experience in a functional/specialist area.
- Medically fit to work in the specific business area.
- Clear security screening record.
- Valid driver’s license (if applicable).
- Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (MEC)
Advantageous Qualifications:
- NQF 7 (Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma) relevant qualification will be advantageous.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal & Governance: Ensure that legal requirements, group standards and policies are adhered to by Determining the need and develop environmental engineering policies, procedures, and standards. Ensuring adherence to all environmental engineering and company policies, procedures, and standards. Interpretating legal requirements. Ensuring adherence to legal compliance through monitoring, measurement and reporting. Ensure that the area of responsibility within the specific section can maintain or improve on their current systems in line with the strategic plans and resource constraints.
- Environmental Engineering strategies: Maintain environmental engineering strategies and systems by Setting of group standards. Environmental engineering designs and reviews to ensure appropriate working conditions at the operations. Determining the need for plans and plan revisions. Conducting environmental engineering projects, surveys, research, and audits. Advising on environmental engineering issues when problems occur. Advising on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimise the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices. Interpreting and act on environmental engineering related legislation. Interpreting group strategy and guidelines into systems and procedures. Being responsible for long term environmental engineering planning (in excess of 5 years). Designing, implementing and managing total effective longterm Ventilation and Refrigeration strategies and systems. Contribute to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Environmental Engineering Department and those of the business area by Developing, participating and supporting the development and acceptance of business plans and strategies. Ensure continuous improvement of environmental engineering programmes and systems by means of integration, optimisation, and maintenance of such systems.
- Compliance measurements: Ensure that legal requirements, group standards and policies are adhered to. Anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control those conditions that may arise in or from the workplace, which may cause illness or adverse health effects to persons. Manage risk assessment and auditing processes. Monitoring of conditions to ensure health of employees and minimise potential occupational health claims against the company. Audit individual shafts to ensure compliance to Mine Health & Safety Act, Group Guidelines and Mine Standards. Assist in the implementation and maintenance of Emergency preparedness programmes. Adhere to environmental engineering policies, procedures, and standards.
- Reporting: Report findings and recommend appropriate interventions through trend analysis of environmental engineering parameters, conditions and high-level complex ventilation / refrigeration modelling. Report and advise on environmental engineering findings and trends. Meet time deadlines pertaining to reporting. Provide information and advice regarding environmental engineering matters related to area of responsibility. Advises on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices. Ensures adherence to legal compliance in terms of required reports.
- Administration: Provide business area information and advice related to environmental engineering. Advise on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimise the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices. Ensure adherence to legal compliance in terms of required reports.
- Stakeholder Relations: Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and externally at all levels and crossfunctionally. Ensuring open communication channels with all relevant stakeholders. Sourcing, contracting and negotiating with service providers. Liaising with the necessary entities on any environmental management related requirements and alignment where applicable. Collaborating with external service providers regarding the design and implementation of tools to enhance processes.
- Financial Management: Working Cost Budgets: Set budgeting parameters for the environmental engineering departments in line with business requirements and financial objectives. Assist in formulating monthly and annual budgets. Cost Savings: Lead and drive cost saving and cash conservation initiatives.
- Building a values-based: organisational culture Actively support and meaningfully participate in the execution of the segment specific organisational development plan. This support will manifest in the targeted shift in culture as described by a valid culture assessment.

Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures. SHE Management: Instill a culture of SHE leadership within the department. Quality Management System (QMS): Approve department’s documents. Comply with requirements of the Quality Management System

Employee Relations: Driving the Organisational Culture and Climate within the Business Unit to ensure achievement of organisational objectives and employee safety. Mentoring individuals to enhance the individual`s knowledge, skills, values and attitude. Creating opportunities for development through participation and involvement in new business or technology enhancement projects for team members.
