SHEQ Manager

A leading water treatment and environmental solutions company is looking for an experienced SHEQ Manager with strong experience in integrated health and safety, environmental and quality management systems to join their team in Muizenberg, Cape Town. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and improving the organisation’s SHEQ systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing ISO standards and certification audits, and driving a strong culture of health, safety, environmental protection and quality excellence.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain, improve and enhance the Occupational Health & Safety Management System in line with ISO 45001.
• Conduct hazard identification, risk assessments and risk mitigation across operational areas.
• Develop and enforce health and safety policies, procedures and work instructions.
• Manage incident investigations and root cause analysis for accidents, near-misses and hazardous situations.
• Conduct regular inspections, audits and safety walkthroughs.
• Develop and deliver health and safety training programmes.
• Maintain health and safety documentation, records and reports.
• Coordinate with external health and safety authorities and manage regulatory compliance.
• Implement corrective and preventive actions to address safety deficiencies.
• Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns and employee engagement.
• Manage the procurement, issuing and maintenance of PPE for head office and operational sites.
• Establish and maintain the Environmental Management System in compliance with ISO 14001.
• Identify and assess environmental aspects and impacts of organisational operations.
• Set environmental objectives and targets aligned with organisational strategy.
• Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation and regulations.
• Manage waste disposal, emissions monitoring and resource conservation programmes.
• Develop and implement environmental emergency preparedness and response procedures.
• Monitor environmental performance metrics and KPIs.
• Conduct environmental audits and management reviews.
• Maintain the Quality Management System in line with ISO 9001.
• Manage quality planning, quality assurance and quality control processes.
• Oversee internal QMS audits and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
• Manage customer feedback mechanisms and quality complaints.
• Manage supplier quality and vendor assessment procedures.
• Establish and monitor quality performance metrics and KPIs.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives across organisational processes.
• Maintain integrated SHEQ policies and management system documentation.
• Ensure alignment and consistency across the ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 management systems.
• Coordinate internal audits across SHEQ functions.
• Prepare for and manage external certification audits.
• Maintain certification status across the applicable ISO standards.
• Report on integrated SHEQ performance to senior management.
• Identify and assess SHEQ training needs across the organisation.
• Maintain training records and competency assessments.
• Conduct induction training for new employees and ensure management understands their SHEQ responsibilities.
• Monitor regulatory changes and assess their impact on the organisation.
• Maintain regulatory compliance calendars and requirements tracking.
• Lead and develop SHEQ staff and promote SHEQ awareness throughout the organisation.
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders on SHEQ matters.
• Manage multiple projects and provide SHEQ support across operational sites.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree or suitable Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Quality Management, Engineering or a related field.
• Alternatively, equivalent relevant professional experience with a minimum of 8+ years.
• Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in health and safety management roles.
• Minimum 3–5 years’ experience managing ISO management systems.
• Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining integrated SHEQ systems.
• Proven track record of successful certification audits and compliance management.
• Experience in a manufacturing, industrial or operations-intensive environment is preferred.
• Deep knowledge of ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 standards.
• Strong understanding of health and safety legislation and regulations.
• Competency in hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies.
• Knowledge of occupational health principles and medical surveillance.
• Understanding of environmental management and sustainability practices.
• Knowledge of quality management principles and continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma.
• Competency in internal audit and management system auditing.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Project management and organisational skills.
• Data analysis and KPI reporting capability.
• Proficiency in MS Office and SHEQ management software.
• Strong leadership and ability to influence across all organisational levels.
• Team management and staff development capabilities.
• Stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Valid Code 8 (B) driver’s licence and own reliable vehicle essential.
• Ability to conduct site inspections, including walking and standing for extended periods.
• Willingness and ability to wear appropriate PPE during site visits and inspections.
• Willingness to travel to operational facilities and external audits.
• Ability to accommodate flexible working hours where required for site requirements or incident response.

Preferred Certifications:

• ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certification.
• ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification.
• ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification.
• NEBOSH International General Certificate or equivalent national qualification.
• Other relevant SHEQ certifications.
