Senior Full Stack Python Software Developer

Job Advert Summary

The Senior Software Developer is responsible for designing, architecting, developing, and delivering solutions across the full technology stack, and for building and evolving modern, scalable applications. The role works as part of an AGILE team, provides technical leadership, drives DevOps practices, and plays a key part in shaping and improving Eduvos’s enterprise application capabilities. It calls for extensive full stack experience across frontend and backend technologies, strong architectural and technical skills, and a commitment to high-quality, secure, and maintainable solutions. The Senior Software Developer also mentors and guides other developers. 

Application Architecture, Development & Maintenance 

• Lead the design, architecture, development, testing, and implementation of full stack solutions, including frontend interfaces, backend services, and integrations with other systems. 

• Design, build, and govern scalable, secure RESTful/GraphQL APIs and the data models and databases that support them. 

• Own the technical direction of modules, workflows, and system integrations, so that solutions stay maintainable and aligned with the enterprise architecture. 

• Make and document sound technical trade-offs on performance, security, scalability, and cost. 

AGILE Practices 

• Take a leading role in AGILE ceremonies (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives), giving technical input on estimates and feasibility. 

• Work with product owners and stakeholders to refine user stories, define acceptance criteria, and break down complex requirements. 

• Ensure the team delivers high-quality code within agreed timelines, and identify delivery risks early. 

DevOps Practices 

• Design, implement, and improve CI/CD pipelines and release processes using Azure DevOps (or similar). 

• Drive automation of build, test, and deployment steps, and set up application monitoring, logging, and alerting. 

• Lead the response to production incidents and make sure the system stays stable and recovers quickly. 

Technical Leadership 

• Define, promote, and enforce coding standards, best practices, and architectural patterns. 

• Lead code reviews and give constructive feedback to raise code quality across the team. 

• Mentor, coach, and support junior and intermediate developers. 

• Evaluate and recommend modern frontend and backend frameworks, tools, and technologies. 

• Lead technical design sessions and own technical design decisions. 

Collaboration & Communication 

• Produce and maintain technical designs, architecture documentation, processes, and configurations. 

• Work closely with cross-functional teams and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions. 

• Communicate progress, risks, and technical trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. 

Problem Solving & Troubleshooting 

• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across the stack. 

• Lead root cause analysis and put in place long-term corrective and preventive actions. 

• Ensure production systems are highly available, performant, and secure. 

Continuous Improvement 

• Drive improvements to tools, processes, and practices that increase development efficiency and quality. 

• Lead the development and evolution of internal frameworks, reusable components, and standards. 

• Pursue continuous professional development and share knowledge across the team. 

Projects & User Support 

• Lead the technical delivery of projects on schedule and within scope, keeping stakeholders informed. 

• Oversee user support so that SLA targets are met and escalated issues are resolved efficiently. 

• Lead knowledge transfer and support end-user and team training. 

Qualifications / Education 

• A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent NQF 7 qualification (Advanced Diploma or Bachelor of Technology) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. 

• An Honours degree (NQF 8) or relevant certifications (e.g. AWS/Azure cloud, Kubernetes, security) will be an advantage. 

Experience 

• 6–8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience designing, building, and maintaining web applications across the full stack in a modern software environment, including frontend and backend development. 

• Minimum of 5 years with JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g. React, Vue.js, or Angular). 

• Minimum of 5 years of backend development with Python frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI. 

• Minimum of 4 years’ experience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases in a production environment, including schema design and performance tuning. 

• Proven experience architecting and delivering scalable, secure, high-performing systems. 

• Experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring junior and intermediate developers. 

Technical / Functional Competencies: 

• Frontend Expertise: Advanced proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (e.g. React, Vue.js, or Angular) alongside HTML5, CSS3/Tailwind, and modern state management, with the ability to define frontend architecture and performance standards. 

• Backend Expertise: Extensive hands-on experience with Python frameworks such as Django, Flask, or FastAPI, and with designing scalable, secure RESTful/GraphQL APIs and service architectures. 

• Databases & DevOps: Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL, including data modelling, schema design, query optimisation, and performance tuning; experience with NoSQL databases, cloud environments (AWS), Docker, and container orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes) is an advantage. 

• Strong knowledge of web security, performance optimisation, and modern architecture patterns (e.g. microservices, event-driven, modular monoliths); able to design clean, scalable solutions to complex problems. 

• Expert ability to write, optimise, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries. 

• Advanced hands-on experience with Azure DevOps (or similar) for boards, repos, and designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines. 

• Ability to define testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end) and embed automated testing in pipelines. 

• Strong experience with DevOps practices, observability, and production support. 

• Excellent coding standards, debugging, and code review skills. 

• Strong knowledge of Agile methodologies and the ability to lead their application within the team. 

• Strong organisational, prioritisation, and time management skills for sprint and project delivery.
