The Opportunity

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for building and supporting data pipelines that are scalable, repeatable and secure.

You will be a core member of an agile team, working with diverse data sources and large volumes of data across both batch and real-time environments. The role combines data engineering, software development, cloud technologies and Big Data to deliver innovative solutions.

You will work across the data lifecycle - from collecting, parsing and managing data through to analysing and delivering data solutions that meet business and technical requirements.

The role also involves developing proofs of concept and implementing complex Big Data solutions, while applying sound software development, programming, database design and systems development practices.

What You'll Be Doing

Your responsibilities will include:

Architecting data analytics frameworks
Translating complex functional and technical requirements into detailed architecture, design and high-performing software
Leading data and batch/real-time analytical solutions using transformational technologies
Working across multiple projects as a technical lead, driving user story analysis and elaboration, design, development, testing and automation
Working across Development and Operations
Database development and operations
Creating data feeds from on-premise environments to AWS Cloud
Supporting production data feeds on a break-fix basis
Creating data marts using Talend or similar ETL development tools
Manipulating data using Python
Processing data using the Hadoop paradigm, particularly EMR, AWS's distribution of Hadoop
Developing Big Data and Business Intelligence solutions, including automated testing and deployment
Contributing to policies, standards and procedures, business continuity and disaster recovery
Researching and evaluating technologies and solutions.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for experienced Data Engineers who combine strong technical capability with the ability to understand business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.

Essential experience and skills

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent
AWS Certification
Extensive knowledge of programming and/or scripting languages
Expert knowledge of data modelling, including an understanding of different data structures and their benefits and limitations
Ability to architect highly scalable distributed systems using open-source tools
5+ years' Data Engineering or Software Engineering experience
2+ years' Big Data experience
2+ years' experience with ETL processes
2+ years' AWS experience
At least 5 years' demonstrated experience with object-oriented design, coding and testing patterns, together with experience engineering software platforms and large-scale data infrastructures.

Technical environment

Experience with the following will be highly relevant:

Big Data batch and streaming tools
Talend
AWS EMR
AWS EC2
AWS S3
Python
PySpark / Spark
