Job Description

Purpose of the Role

To maintain and repair plant, machinery, and equipment across the Richards Bay Casthouse, ensuring maximum equipment availability, reliability, and safety.

The core responsibilities of the position include:

  • Maintain all overhead cranes on site as per the planned work schedule, including load testing and rope replacements.
  • Attend to breakdowns (electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation) and perform planned work as per schedule.
  • Work on various machine centres, including the SERMAS, mixing furnaces, DC pits, ingot caster, sewage station, compressor station, water cooling plant, and substations.
  • Assume a leadership role while on shift.
  • Implement cost-effective maintenance strategies.
  • Apply various problem-solving tools to resolve issues.
  • Work as a member of the team, ensuring overall plant objectives are achieved in terms of production, safety, quality, and plant reliability.

Requirements

The core requirements for the position include:

  • Matric.
  • Successfully trade-tested at a recognised institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years' post-apprenticeship experience in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.

Technical Competencies:

  • Overhead crane maintenance experience.
  • Experience in MV switching.
  • Possession of a Wireman's licence would be advantageous.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical schematic drawings.
  • Systematic fault finding across electrical, mechanical fitting, PLCs, variable speed drives, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Competent with isolation and lock-out procedures.
  • Previous working experience with Siemens and Allen Bradley PLCs; Siemens, Rockwell, and ABB AC drives would be advantageous.
  • Ability to work on overhead cranes, electro-pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, basic instrumentation, and basic auto-electrical equipment.
  • Familiar with Maximo or a similar CMMS.

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to interface with people of diverse professions within the organisation.
  • A strong ability to work independently.
  • Actively participate in reliability and problem-solving forums.
  • Preparedness to work overtime and standby.
