Job Description

We are looking for a Mid-Level Software Engineer to join our frontend engineering team. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, enhancement and maintenance of modern frontend applications and shared UI capabilities. They will work primarily with React and TypeScript, while leveraging established component libraries and frontend engineering practices.

The ideal candidate is pragmatic, curious and quality-focused. They should be comfortable learning new technologies, working within existing technical standards and contributing to the continuous improvement of the team's engineering practices.

What you'll do:

  • Frontend Development
    • Develop and maintain modern, responsive and scalable frontend applications using React and TypeScript.
    • Build reusable and maintainable frontend components using established component libraries and design systems.
    • Work with MUI / MUI X or comparable component libraries to implement consistent user interfaces.
    • Translate business and technical requirements into production-ready frontend solutions.
    • Implement designs accurately while considering usability, accessibility, responsiveness and maintainability.
    • Make appropriate technical decisions within the scope of assigned work.
    • Investigate and resolve technical issues across the development lifecycle.
    • Contribute to improving existing applications and components rather than unnecessarily introducing new patterns or technologies.
  • Shared Components and Design Systems
    • Contribute to the development and maintenance of reusable components and shared frontend capabilities.
    • Understand the principles of component reuse, composition and well-defined component APIs.
    • Work with established design systems, themes and design tokens where applicable.
    • Understand the distinction between functionality that belongs within a shared library and functionality that should remain within an individual application.
    • Consider the impact of shared component changes on consuming applications.
    • Maintain backwards compatibility where appropriate and identify potential breaking changes before implementation.
    • Contribute to improving the consistency and quality of the team's frontend ecosystem.
  • Software Engineering Practices
    • Write clean, maintainable and well-structured code.
    • Follow established coding standards, architectural patterns and engineering practices.
    • Write appropriate unit, component and integration tests.
    • Participate in code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback.
    • Follow established Git workflows, including branching, pull requests, code review and version-control practices.
    • Understand and work with CI/CD pipelines, automated builds, testing and deployment processes.
    • Assist with investigating build and deployment issues.
    • Understand the software development lifecycle from development through to production deployment.
    • Create and maintain technical documentation where required.
    • Document implementation decisions, reusable components and technical processes.
    • Identify opportunities to improve development workflows, tooling and engineering practices.
  • Collaboration
    • Work effectively with other software engineers, designers, QA, product owners and technical stakeholders.
    • Participate in technical discussions and contribute to solution design.
    • Clarify requirements and raise technical concerns or dependencies early.
    • Communicate progress, risks and technical decisions clearly.
    • Participate in peer reviews and knowledge-sharing activities.
    • Support less experienced team members when appropriate.
    • Contribute positively to the team's engineering culture and ways of working.
  • AI-Assisted Development
    • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve productivity and efficiency.
    • Use AI where appropriate for tasks such as researching technical approaches, generating boilerplate, assisting with debugging, creating tests or exploring implementation options.
    • Apply appropriate engineering judgement when reviewing AI-generated output.
    • Validate, test and understand generated code before introducing it into production.
    • Remain accountable for the quality, security, maintainability and correctness of code produced with AI assistance.
    • Stay aware of emerging AI-assisted software development practices and identify opportunities to use them effectively.
Your Expertise

  • Approximately 2–5 years of relevant software engineering experience, depending on demonstrated technical capability.
  • Demonstrable experience developing and maintaining frontend applications using React.
  • Experience working within a professional software development environment.
  • Experience working with source control, code reviews and software delivery processes.
  • Equivalent practical experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications.
  • Essential
    • Practical experience developing frontend applications using React.
    • Working knowledge of TypeScript.
    • Experience working with component libraries or frontend design systems, such as MUI or comparable libraries.
    • Understanding of reusable component development and component composition.
    • Understanding of component API design, including the use of props and sensible interfaces.
    • Experience working with Git and collaborative source-control workflows.
    • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and software deployment processes.
    • Experience writing and maintaining automated tests.
    • Ability to troubleshoot frontend issues and investigate problems independently.
    • Ability to understand and contribute to an existing codebase.
    • Ability to follow established technical patterns and standards.
    • Ability to produce clear technical and implementation documentation.
  • Preferred
    • Experience with MUI / MUI X.
    • Experience working with themes and design tokens.
    • Experience contributing to or consuming a shared component library or design system.
    • Familiarity with micro-frontend architecture and/or Module Federation.
    • Basic understanding of frontend build tooling such as Webpack.
    • Experience working with API integrations.
    • Experience with Figma design handoffs.
    • Understanding of frontend accessibility and responsive design principles.
    • Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools.
Engineering Capability:
  • The successful candidate should be able to:
    • Break down requirements into manageable technical tasks.
    • Understand the problem before selecting a technical solution.
    • Make sound and pragmatic technical decisions within their area of responsibility.
    • Explain the reasoning behind their technical decisions.
    • Work independently without requiring detailed instructions for every implementation decision.
    • Recognise when additional guidance or escalation is required.
    • Identify technical risks, dependencies and potential impacts early.
    • Consider maintainability, performance, reusability and user experience when implementing solutions.
    • Understand the impact of changes beyond the immediate feature or component being developed.
    • Investigate problems systematically and arrive at appropriate solutions.
    • Learn unfamiliar technologies, frameworks and patterns when required.
    • Balance delivery requirements with code quality and long-term maintainability.

A successful mid-level engineer will:

  • Take ownership of their work from development through to delivery.
  • Work independently while knowing when to ask for assistance.
  • Make sensible technical decisions rather than simply implementing the first solution that comes to mind.
  • Follow established engineering standards and development processes.
  • Produce clean, maintainable and appropriately tested code.
  • Understand the implications of changes to shared functionality.
  • Contribute meaningfully during code reviews.
  • Document important technical decisions and functionality.
  • Proactively investigate problems rather than waiting for someone else to provide the solution.
  • Communicate technical concerns, risks and dependencies early.
  • Contribute to the team's technical knowledge and continuous improvement.
  • Continue developing their technical skills and understanding of modern engineering practices.

Personal Attributes:

  • Independent: Able to take ownership of assigned work and make progress without requiring constant supervision.
  • Pragmatic: Able to select solutions appropriate to the problem without unnecessary complexity or over-engineering.
  • Accountable: Takes responsibility for their work and follows issues through to resolution.
  • Curious: Interested in understanding how things work and continuously developing their technical skills.
  • Collaborative: Works effectively with engineers, designers, QA, product and other stakeholders.
  • Quality-focused: Understands that successful delivery includes maintainability, testing, documentation and reliability — not simply completing a ticket.
  • Adaptable: Comfortable working within an existing technical ecosystem while contributing ideas for improvement.
  • Communicative: Able to clearly explain technical decisions, challenges and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willing to Learn: Open to feedback and comfortable learning new technologies, tools and engineering practices as the team's needs evolve.
Qualifications:
  • Relevant degree, diploma or equivalent practical experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
What success loks like:

    • Understand how their work fits into the wider application and shared frontend ecosystem.
    • Identify and raise potential technical issues before they become larger problems.
    • Document their work sufficiently for other engineers to understand and maintain it.
    • Use modern development tools, including AI-assisted tools, responsibly and effectively.
    • Become a dependable member of the engineering team who can be trusted to own and deliver their area of work.
