Electrical Design Engineer - Engineering / Industrial Automation / Mining

SUMMARY:
To develop and oversee electrical designs for industrial projects, ensuring technical compliance, safety, quality and cost-effectiveness.

POSITION INFO:
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Plan, coordinate and oversee electrical design activities in line with project requirements and business objectives. Develop and review electrical designs in accordance with applicable industry standards, legislation and safety regulations. Design Motor Control Centres (MCCs) in accordance with IEC 61439 requirements, including heat-rise calculations, equipment selection and layout design. Execute lighting, small power, substation and cable racking designs. Perform cable sizing, transformer sizing and electrical equipment selection. Ensure compliance with applicable electrical legislation, SANS standards and international electrical and instrumentation specifications. Identify and implement design improvements to optimise efficiency, safety and cost-effectiveness. Liaise with clients to establish, clarify and finalise electrical design specifications and technical requirements. Prepare scopes of work, technical specifications, Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and tender documentation. Compile detailed technical data packs to support manufacturing and software engineering activities. Provide technical guidance, mentorship and support to CAD operators and engineers in training. Support project execution from design development through to successful implementation. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Degree, Technical Diploma or equivalent NQF qualification in Electrical Engineering. Extensive operational and electrical design experience, including exposure to relevant electrical design software. Proven experience in industrial plant electrical design. Exposure to the mining industry, with mining design experience highly advantageous. Sound knowledge of international electrical and instrumentation specifications and standards. Working knowledge of SANS standards. Knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Strong technical product knowledge. Knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems. Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration will be advantageous but is not essential. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE Candidates should have practical design experience and knowledge of: MCC design and IEC 61439 compliance. Heat-rise calculations and electrical equipment selection. Electrical layout design. Lighting and small power installations. Substation design. Cable racking and cable sizing. Transformer sizing. Industrial electrical plant design. Electrical safety legislation and applicable standards.
