A proudly South African food processing company, is looking for an experienced Data Engineer to join its IT team in Cape Town. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled data professional to build and optimise scalable data platforms and pipelines that enable business intelligence, analytics, automation and data-driven decision-making. The successful candidate will design, develop and maintain reliable data pipelines and cloud-based data solutions, transforming data from multiple source systems into high-quality, structured datasets for reporting and advanced analytics. Working closely with BI, Analytics, Automation and business teams, you will translate business requirements into effective technical solutions while ensuring data quality, security, governance and performance. Duties: Design, build and maintain scalable batch and near-real-time data pipelines. Develop and optimise ETL/ELT processes for data ingestion, cleansing, transformation and modelling. Build and maintain data warehouse and lakehouse architectures. Develop analytical and dimensional data models to support reporting and business intelligence. Implement data quality controls, validation processes, data governance and security standards. Monitor and optimise data pipeline performance, reliability and cost efficiency. Collaborate with BI analysts, data scientists and business stakeholders to deliver fit-for-purpose data solutions. Troubleshoot data issues, conduct root cause analysis and drive continuous improvement. Job Experience & Skills Required: Qualifications: Matric (Grade 12) Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related field. Microsoft certifications in Data Engineering, Azure or Fabric will be advantageous. Experience: 3-5 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, data warehousing or a related role. Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Services or equivalent cloud data platforms. Strong SQL skills and sound knowledge of data modelling. Experience developing ETL/ELT pipelines using modern data engineering tools. Working knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, including Data Factory, Lakehouse and Warehouse, or equivalent technologies. Experience with Python, Spark or similar data processing technologies. Understanding of cloud data architectures, APIs and system integrations. Skills & Competencies: Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to data quality. Ability to manage priorities, deliver projects and work independently. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. A proactive mindset with a passion for innovation, automation and continuous improvement.
